The OS and Autodesk Design suite are installed on the SSD and all files/projects are saved to the HDD. This system is being used for CAD Drafting (Autocad 2014) and 3D modeling and rendering using Autodesk Inventor 2014 and 3DS Max (which I haven't had to use yet).

So I ended up getting a new desktop PC at work as my old laptop was struggling and the issues continued even after having IT look at it. Yes, the 670M (and a laptop in general) will be slower than an equivalent desktop pc, so if you're determined to get a new system, do you NEED a laptop? if you want maximum Inventor performance for your $ then look at a desktop system.

I would make sure this 670M is enabled and used instead of the HD 4000. it is also a LOT slower/less powerful than the 670M benchmarks give the 670M at 1906 ( ) and the HD 4000 at 454 ( ) - assuming these to be linear then it's about 4 times the power.
It doesn't have its own memory to uses up some of the system ram, which is ironically what your IT seem to be accusing the 670M of doing. The HD4000 is an on-board graphics chip that is inside the i7 processor.

The laptop I own now, Acer E3-111, can do single part files for Inventor and do editing but the rendering takes far to much time and assembly files tend to freeze will working on it. Sadly that is true, the only 11 inch laptop I can think of that has discrete graphics was the Alienware m11x from a couple years ago, but that is now discontinued. I don't think there are any laptops that are 11 - 12 inches with a discrete graphics card. For video editing you maybe able to get away with it but for serious 3d and video editing, a discrete card is needed. Also the laptop is not really made for that sort of thing.

The main reason is that you will stuggle to model or to use video editing software on a small screen.
The lenovo you have mentioned is ok for entry level 3d modelling and video editing but I wouldn't recommend it.
